Machu Picchu is an ancient Incan citadel located in the Andes Mountains of Peru. It was built in the 15th century and is renowned for its stunning architecture and breathtaking mountainous backdrop. The site is divided into two main areas: the agricultural sector, with terraced fields and irrigation systems, and the urban sector, with temples, plazas, and residential buildings.


Machu Picchu's purpose is believed to have been a royal estate for Incan emperor Pachacuti. The site was abandoned during the Spanish conquest and remained hidden from the outside world until its rediscovery by American historian and explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911.


The architecture of Machu Picchu is characterized by precisely cut stones that fit together without the use of mortar. Notable structures include the Intihuatana stone (used for astronomical and ceremonial purposes), the Room of the Three Windows, and the Temple of the Sun.


Access to Machu Picchu is primarily through the nearby town of Aguas Calientes, with visitors often taking a train or hiking the Inca Trail to reach the site. Due to its popularity, efforts have been made to manage tourism and preserve the site's delicate environment.


Machu Picchu was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and is considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Its historical significance and stunning beauty continue to attract visitors from around the globe.
